The cooler months of the year can be a great time for Anglers to chase some squid in the shallow waters. Casting squid jigs from either a boat or even from the shore during the day or night can be effective in getting a few squid for a feed. When choosing a squid jig Anglers should be mindful of the depth of water they are casting into as different jigs have different sink weights and sink rates.
Heavy jigs in shallow water can result in snagging the bottom and light jigs in deeper water will take too long or not get to where the squid are holding at in the water column. There is no exact science to selecting colours (everyone has a different favourite) but is worth having a natural colour as well as a bright colour for variety. As a general rule - Anglers fishing under 2m of water or less are best using jigs 1.5-2.5 in size and in water over 2m jigs 2.5-3.5 in size. Squid jigs can be worked by simply casting them out and slowly winding them back in but some will have better success with a stop/start jigging retrieve. Places to try your luck are areas with some type of structure like rocky foreshores, around the bay island coral reefs or weed beds. Squid are accessible for all Anglers so get out there and get yourself a great of awesome feed of calamari. NB: It is important to know the rules and regulations in your area if you are going to target Squid (no bag limit in Qld), Each state has different rules and regulations. Information is available from your state DPI website. Remember keeping for the anglers immediate needs is good sustainable fishing practice.
