Regulation of Queensland's waterways has a twofold purpose, to preserve aquatic environments and to make water recreation as safe as possible. Learn Queensland's fishing and boat regulations when out on smooth waters to stay safe, practice sustainable fishing and avoid fines. Fishing Regulations Certain aquatic species and natural resources require protection to prevent overfishing and endangerment. It is the responsibility of federal, state and territory government to manage fisheries and waterways within their jurisdiction. To avoid getting fined or jeopardising the sustainability of Queensland's aquatic species, anglers are expected to know the fishing regulations that apply to them. Regulations change between lakes, rivers and the ocean, so it is necessary to know the unique regulations concerning the areas you fish. There are also different size and possession limits for different species of fish. Anglers who are passionate about fishing are also passionate about preserving the longevity of the sport and the species. To learn what aquatic animals are protected in Queensland, read Protecting Queensland's Vulnerable Fish'. A little research before heading out goes a long way towards preventing a fine. Boat RegulationsThe owner or driver of a boat is responsible for all the safety on their vessel and passengers. It must be in good condition, operated safely, and have the correct safety equipment.
- Ensure your recreational boat or personal watercraft (if the engine is 3 kilowatts or more) is registered.
- If you wish to drive a boat with an engine power greater than 4.5 kW, you need a marine licence.
Safety Rules for Smooth Waters Every experienced angler also knows the importance staying safe. While boating on smooth waters, make sure you have the correct safety equipment. The following is required or recommended for registered boats operating on smooth waters.
- Registered boats must have enough life jackets for everyone on board. Life jackets for smooth waters must be Level 50 or 50 special purpose (50S), a personal floatation device type 2 or 3, or a wetsuit with inbuilt flotation approved as a personal floatation device.
- All children under 12 must be wearing one while out on the water.
- Signalling device, capacity label and firefighting equipment are required for registered boats.
- Pumping/bailing equipment, anchoring and oars/paddles are highly recommended but not required.
- Boats traveling at night or when there is reduced visibility must have navigation lights (side lights and an all-around white anchor light).
- Equipment past their expiry date is not acceptable.
Safety tips All safety equipment on board must be easily accessible in case of an emergency. Additionally, be aware of weather predictions and stay alert for changes. Weather can change dramatically with little warning. Always inform someone of the time and location you will be fishing. Finally, make sure you have enough battery power or fuel to get you there and back. To learn more about safety equipment for recreational boats, click here. Stocked Impoundment Permit's and Regulations Recreational anglers do not need a fishing license in QLD, unless fishing in some stocked impoundments. Thirty-two dams in Queensland require a Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP). For a full list of dams requiring permits per region, click here. Permits are affordable and pay for the restocking of the dams and the management of the SIP program. Dams are stocked with fish that will not repopulate and fish must be restocked with fingerlings regularly. Carry your permits while fishing to avoid a fine. Lost or illegible permits must be replaced. According to the Queensland Government, permits cost:
- $8 per week
- $41 per year
- $36 per year if entitled to a discount (have a Queensland Government Seniors Card, Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or a Repatriation Health Care Card)
Married couples and de facto partners only need one to share. Individuals under 18 are not required to have a permit to fish. Purchase a SIP online, over the phone with Fisheries Queensland on 13 25 23, or at SIP agents across Queensland. Get Out There and Fish Queensland offers an abundance of fishing opportunities.
