Photo Credit: www.daf.qld.gov.au If you're fishing in the canals around the Gold Coast, you may want to try your luck at catching a few Yellowfin Bream.  This common fish, also known as, sea bream and silver bream, have a silvery/bronze body and yellowish ventral and anal fins.  It can sometimes be confused with Tarwhine and Pikey Bream. Their common size is 25 cm, with a maximum length of 65 cm.  Maximum bag limit is 30 bream total including Pikey, and Tarwhine.  Minimum size for possession is 25 cm. Location & Targeting Yellowfin are common throughout the east coast of Australia from Townsville to the Gippsland Lakes Region in Victoria.  If you are in SE Queensland, the Gold Coast canals are great for catching Yellowfin Bream.  The Gold Coast Canal system is extensive and has multiple areas that produce large fish.  Fishing in the canals can be done by boat or from the banks.  Yellowfins can be targeted around structures (break walls, trees, pylons, etc.), estuaries and even open beaches. They enjoy small gutters, deep waters, and sandy or rocky bottoms. As carnivores, they prey on bottom-dwelling invertebrates (crabs, polychaete worms, shellfish) and small fish.  If food is present, the yellowfin will be there to feast.  During the winter months, they gather near deep fast moving water, where rivers and estuaries join the ocean. Yellowfin are cautious creatures and are easily spooked by noise and movement. Time of day: Yellowfin bream are active throughout the day.  Similar to bass, late afternoon, dawn and changes in the tide are when Yellowfin are most active. Gear & Bait Light, spinning outfits are great for fishing yellowfins.  A 6'6" , 7'6" 2-8lb rod will work well paired with a 1000-2500 reel.  Have a look at the Shimano Sedona FE, Daiwa Exceler DX or the Daiwa Sol II for a fantastic reel and the NS One Amped, Wilson Magnum or Daiwa Ballistic X Spin for a great rod.  A large range of hard body lures including Zipbait Khamsin Tiny DR, Lucky Craft NW Pencil and Jackall Chubby Deep and Shallow are great. Soft plastics like Gulp 2" Shrimp, Z-man 2.5" Grubz and Ecogear Aqua Prawn are also useful when catching Yellowfin Bream. Yellowfin are a great catch and release or table fish.
